Bear McCreary Scores Fox’s Human Target

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

While I was 1/2 watching last night’s episode of “Human Target” on Fox my ears perked up at a very distinctive drum banging noise, sure enough, I checked on IMDB and saw that Bear McCreary is in charge of scoring the Action series.  The score is rather large and grand for the series, which is something that we would expect for Bear. “Human Target” airs on Tuesdays at 9 after American Idol on Fox.

Bear McCreary talks about his work including doing the music for Caprica

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

Alpha Waves Radio welcomes Bear McCreary, the man behind the music of Battlestar Galactica, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and the new Syfy series Caprica, to talk about how he uses his music to change the energy of these shows.

‘Avatar’ score will be “epic,” “hugely cinematic”

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

1156d32ade1c2edcae046aa1a402cb33MovieScoreMagazine has the first insight into the score for James Cameron’s 3D film “AVATAR.”

Mike Knobloch, the executive vice president of Fox Music, describes James Horner’s music for the film as epic. “It’s a brilliantly unique blend of traditional and contemporary, electronic elements and spans the entire spectrum of attitude and energy – from bombastic action to the delicate, romantic discovery of a new world.” In a nutshell, the film, which is premieres on December 18, tells the story about a war veteran (Sam Worthington) who is sent to Pandora, a planet inhabited by the Na’vi, a humanoid race which is fighting for survival.

One of the reasons behind the heat surrounding the Avatar score is, of course, that the film itself is one of the most anticipated Hollywood movies to hit the big screen in recent years. Another reason is that putting the names Cameron and Horner in one sentence means gold: Aliens from 1986 is regarded to be among the finest action film scores ever written (despite the extremely tight working conditions for the composer) and Titanic… well, do we really need to explain?

Interestingly, the time Horner is being allowed to work on Avatar seems to be the complete opposite of Aliens, where Horner had 3 1/2 weeks to finish about 80 minutes of music.Horner has been working on Avatar for more than a year and was doing pre-records and working on ideas with Cameron already back in June 2008. “The recording of the score has been an ongoing process for months and it’s still in process. Electronic elements of the score are being recorded at a studio assembled specifically for this project. The orchestral component of the score is being recorded in groups of dates that started in June,” Mike Knobloch explained, adding that the orchestral sessions are being held at the Newman Stage at 20th Century Fox.

TSCC S2 DVD Clips & Extras

Friday, September 11th, 2009

1827_4_largeWe’re getting closer to the release of the Season 2 DVDs! And Warner Brothers has released several clips to get us all excited! (Click on our links at the side of the site to pre-order the DVDs or Blu-Rays!)

First up Blu-Ray.com put out a comprehensive review of the disks – here are all of the special features (view some of their screenshots HERE:)

“Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles – Season 2″ features bonus materials spread across all five discs in this set. Below is a disc-by-disc breakdown of what Warner has included.

Disc One

1827_1_largeDisc one features a pair of commentary tracks, the first for the episode Samson and Delilah and featuring Executive Producer Josh Friedman and Actors Lena Heady, Thomas Dekker, Summer Glau, and Sirley Manson. Commentary track two, available on Allison from Palmdale, features Executive Producers Josh Friedman, James Middleton, and John Wirth, and Actors Thomas Dekker and Summer Glau. Also included is The Storyboard Process: Cameron Goes Bad (1080i, 2:55), a brief piece that looks at the importance of storyboards to the filmmaking process, including a side-by-side storyboard vs. final product comparison.

Disc Two

While none of the five episodes found on disc two sport a commentary track, the disc does offer two “Terminated Scenes,” one each for the episodes The Tower is Tall but the Fall is Short (1080p, 1:04) and Complications (1080p, 0:26). Also included here under the “Behind the Story” heading is Cameron vs. Rosie: Fight Rehearsal (1080i, 5:27), an informative piece that looks at the process of bringing this fight sequence to life, featuring raw behind-the-scenes footage, interview clips with the crew, and storyboard analysis.

Disc Three

Only a pair of “Terminated Scenes” for Strange Things Happen at the One-Two Point (1080p, 0:50) and Earthlings Welcome Here (1080p, 1:04) are included on disc three.

Disc Four

Like disc three, disc four features only a collection of “Terminated Scenes,” this time one from Today is the Day — Part 1 (1080p, 1:19) and four from Today is the Day — Part 2 (1080p, 2:50 combined).

1827_8_largeDisc Five

Disc five contains the bulk of the supplementary material, headlined by another pair of commentary tracks. Track one, accompanying Adam Raised a Cain, features Executive Producers Josh Friedman, James Middleton, and John Wirth, and Actors Thomas Dekker and Summer Glau. The second track with the same participants is available for the series finale episode Born to Run. Collision With the Future: Deconstructing the Hunter Killer Attack (1080i) is an interactive piece that takes viewers on an in-depth tour of the many layers of work that came together to create the season’s climactic sequence. Viewers may choose from one of four boxes — one each for “Production,” “Direction,” “Special FX,” and “Visual FX” — from a main menu that features all four pieces playing simultaneously with an overlaying commentary with Creator/Executive Producer/Writer Josh Friedman. The Continuing Chronicles: Terminator is a collection of eight featurettes presented in 1080i high definition: Write the Future (12:39), Conceptualization (8:18), Blood and Metal (7:39), Designing Deconstruction (7:32), Choreographing Chaos (7:21), War Stories (9:15), Setting the Tempo (13:15), and Motivations (9:51). Rounding out disc five are three “Terminated Scenes” — two for To the Lighthouse (1080p, 0:43 & 1:32) and one for Born to Run (1080p, 0:27) — and a gag reel (1080p, 6:04).
