Thomas Dekker has joined the cast of HBO Films’ “Cinema Verite,” a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the groundbreaking 1970s documentary “An American Family.”

The project, written by David Seltzer, begins production this summer in Los Angeles with Tim Robbins, James Gandolfini and Diane Lane also starring.

When “American Family” premiered on PBS in 1973, it was the first show to document a real-life family dealing with such problems as divorce and sexual identity.

Robbins and Lane will play parents Bill and Pat Loud. Dekker will portray their son Lance, who became the center of scrutiny when he came out as a gay man on the show. Gandolfini will portray documentary producer Craig Gilbert.

Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini are directing. Exec producers are Gavin Polone and Zanne Devine.

Dekker most recently starred on the big screen in “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” He starred as John Connor on the Fox series “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.”

The actor, repped by WME and the Schiff Co., next stars opposite Jeremy Piven and Mira Sorvino in the indie feature “Waska.”
