“Terminator 4’ to film scene near Taos

(Thanks Ross for the heads up!)

Signs warning of traffic delays already are in place near the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge west of Taos.
Expect U.S. 64 traffic delays before and after Tuesday (June 10)

Here’s the latest regarding the production of “Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins” set to begin filming a scene Tuesday (June 10) near Taos, according to a notice from Mindy Jones, assistant location manager for Project Angel at Albuquerque Studios.

The notice, which was distributed by Cathy Connelly of the town of Taos, states that shooting will occur between 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. that day. Since this is termed a “closed set,” spectators will not be allowed to watch filming or be near the staging area. This is also apparently a “second unit” group, which will be filming, so no principal actors likely will be on-set.

“Our scene involves a car chase on the bridge,” Jones said. “Unlike most movies that film roads, our film occurs after a nuclear explosion. Therefore, we will place wrecked cars on the bridge as set dressing. We will add greens, sand, etc. to make the set look ‘overgrown.’ Because of the unusual nature of our film we plan to dress the bridge for two days, shoot one day and strike (the set for) two days.”

Since the bridge is on U.S. 64, the connecting link between both sides of the Rio Grande Gorge, there will be traffic delays, according to Connelly.

Beginning today (June 7), wrecked cars will be trucked up from Albuquerque and stored in the rest area parking lot located on the west side of the bridge.

On Sunday (June 8), set dressing will start. There will be 30 minute intermittent traffic control conducted by Taos County Sheriff’s officers starting at 8 a.m., and will continue all day and all night. There may be possible helicopter “plate shots” on this day, according to Jones.

Monday (June 9), dressing and traffic control will continue with more possible helicopter plate shots.

Tuesday (June 10) is the day of filming. Planned are helicopter shots, stunt driving, and a chase car.

Wednesday (June 11) the set will be struck and all props, equipment and dressing will start being removed, all of which is scheduled to be completed by Thursday (June 12). Traffic control will also continue during this time.

“The project has permits from (New Mexico Department of Transportation) District 5, the Taos (Bureau of Land Management), and we are working on an agreement with the Taos Pueblo,” Jones said. “We have notified the following agencies: Taos County Sheriff, Taos Volunteer Fire Department, Taos Mayor Bobby Duran and Town Manager Abigail Adame.”

This fourth in the “Terminator” series of futuristic science fiction films is said to mark the first in a new trilogy. The New Mexico Film Office statement informs us that Moritz Borman, Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek will produce. McG (Joseph McGinty Nichol) will direct the film from a script by John Brancato and Michael Ferris.

It is set to star Christian Bale as John Connor and Anton Yelchin as Kyle Reese. Other stars reportedly in the cast include Bryce Dallas Howard and Moon Bloodgood. The production is based at Albuquerque Studios.
